Two ways to get platelets
Apheresis platelets (single donor)
- Collected from one donor by an apheresis machine, which keeps only the platelets and returns the rest of the donor's blood.
- One collection can provide an adult dose, roughly equal to 4 to 6 whole-blood-derived units.
- Exposes the patient to one donor.
Platelet concentrates (random donor)
- Made from whole blood donations, with the platelets separated afterwards.
- Several units (often 4 to 6) from different donors are pooled to make one adult dose.
- Exposes the patient to several donors.

Who needs platelets?
Patients with sepsis or DIC, blood cancers, severe low platelet counts, and some surgeries. Your doctor will decide what your patient needs.
